PERLICON - Expanded Perlite
PERLICON is an
amorphous volcanic glass lava rock (SiO2)
that has relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of
obsidian. PERLICON has the unusual characteristic of expanding and becoming
porous when it is heated. It can expand to as much as twenty times its
original volume. Expanded when is heated to 1100 ‘C) and the water
molecules trapped in the mineral turn
into vapor causing it to expand. (simple like grain to popcorn.) the mineral particles pop like popcorn and form
a granular, snow-white material that is so light in weight it weighs only about
(50-160 kg/cubic meter).
Particle of PERLICON is comprised of tiny closed air cells or
bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which
provide an extremely large surface area. These surface cavities trap moisture
and make it available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical
shape of each particle or PERLICON, air passages are formed in the growing
media thereby providing excellent aeration
HORTICULTURAL
PERLICON
GROWING MEDIA FOR GARDEN/POTTING MIX
PERLICON promotes drainage and aeration in heavy clay soils,
it provides optimum moisture retention for successful plant growth , and
reduces dead loads of building structure . Hence advantageous in redefining the structure of garden soil, patio
plantings, and roofscapes etc.,
Advantages of
Horticultural grade PERLICON
Enhances aeration and drainage
Helps moisture and nutrients readily available to plants
Inorganic and thus do not deteriorate.
Maintains neutral pH of
6.5 to 7.5.
Serves as an insulator to reduce extreme soil temperature
varients .
Is sterile , clean, odorless, lightweight, and safe to
handle.

PERLICON in Construction
PERLICON
and vermiculite have been used for years as an aggregate in lightweight,
insulating concrete and plaster, and as a loose fill insulation material for
concrete masonry blocks, cavity walls, and in residential homes. They also
are used in a variety of specialty applications ranging from fireproofing
sprays, chimney fills, interstitial floors, acoustical sprays, etc.
